Multi-Layered Outlining

I apologize if this has been posted before, but I couldn’t find an answer. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something.

I’m looking for a way to outline like the following:

Main Idea 1

  • Sub Idea…
    -----Sub sub idea…

Main Idea 2
- Sub idea…
------ Sub sub idea…

And where I might be able to easily move sections or cells, if needed. I’m thinking of something like OmniOutliner.

Does the current outlining option in Scrivener have this ability? Am I missing it somehow? I’d love to keep all of my writing (research, outlining, writing) in Scrivener, but I keep feeling like I need to outline elsewhere.

Any hints from academics or other outliners?

Have you tried the main outliner? Try selecting a container (or even a single file node) and pressing Cmd-3 to switch to outlining mode.

It’s not as fancy as OmniOutliner, but I’ve never felt myself needing anything more than what it provides, for this sort of outlining anyway.
