I don’t get what you are saying here? Is this rhetorical?
It could be read as rhetorical (of course L&L wouldn’t sponsor crime!). But my intended idea was: “just being a sponsor” also isn’t some magical device that repels all criticism. Which would be more obvious in the fictional drug cartel case. “We’re just sponsoring them, don’t worry!” Think of it as the opposite extreme of: “They talked to those devils once, burn them! Now!!!111” That’s all. ![]()
Ah, okay. Got it. Well, then we agree, I guess?
Just a note that we aren’t going to relitigate the NaNo issues here. And we especially aren’t going to do it via unsourced, out of context screenshots.
Was this a reply to the blocked post above?
Yes. And anyone else who might have the same idea.
I was very disappointed to see that Scrivener and L&L is again a major sponsor of NaNoWriMo this year as per the latest email from NaNoWriMo.
Yeah, I got the emails this weekend, too, which left an unpleasant taste. Much the same feeling across many of the writing discords and other places writers hang out. This reflects very poorly on L&L, and I’m disappointed (but I guess a reminder to unsubscribe from those mail lists, hah).
NaNoWriMo have made another non-apology statement that’s worth reading if you want an eye-roll (and to see that they have learned nothing).
Just a minor point of clarification. We paid for calendar 2024 sponsorship all the way back in January. We have, as far as I know, not yet decided how to handle calendar 2025.
Thank you for the clarification on timing. FWIW I’d be more than willing to pony up some $ to cover your expenses for the sponsorship if you would take it back and deny NaNoWriMo the right to promote using your good name. I am sure there are legal ramifications but it’s something to consider.
I was there for the meltdown of '23. It was bom-bad (to use a light-hearted turn of phrase for an unbelievably bizarre situation).
It was such a weird thing that could have been solved very simply and democratically (for lack of a better term) in a lot of cases, but Those In Charge refused to do what was necessary for reasons that didn’t make sense.
It was one of the weirdest forum shut-downs I’ve ever witnessed after being online for 20+ years.
Sounds like this problem is gone. All of it. I don’t trust news released at this peculiar date, but let’s hope it’s not a joke:
Probably true. If it was an April Fool’s prank, I think it’d be on their website. Nevertheless doing a search for “has nanowrimo been shut down” reveals numerous hits from diverse sources.
