If I understand it correctly, all references/bookmarks are atomic in the sense that they simply specify a URI to be opened externally.
It might be interesting to treat URI’s of the form « file://localhost/…/ » (local folders) differently by giving them a triangle icon that, if clicked on, revealed the folder’s contents (which in turn would be treated recursively in the same manner). In other words, something that looks similar to a folder in the binder, but which refers to an external folder.
In other words, a mini-finder/file browser that could be used to navigate within external folder reference hierarchies without opening a Finder window.
