I am trying to compile my manuscript into a simple word docx with chapters at the head of the page and the chapter following. I have tried so many options. The closest I’m getting is with Manuscript (Times) with a Heading and Section. When it compiles, I’ll get Chapter One on a page, then nothing, then Chapter Two on a page, then the text for chapter one, and so on. The new compile is so much more complicated and difficult to use.
Not at computer but suspect chapters are not all the same section type- ie chapter section and check to see all scenes in chapter are same section type like scene. Then when use base format for compile must assign a section layout for each section type once assign layouts click ok and review to see if is what you like then try compiling. The key is all chapters are same section type. Look at this in inspector window under metadata and check project settings. Hope this helps point you in the right direction
These workflows may be of use. The first is a comprehensive end-to-end fiction compile with chapter numbers, titles, epigraphs, POV-specific headers, page breaks, etc. (Leave out anything you don’t want.)
The second compiles chapter titles, epigraphs, and synopsis entries and illustrates Scrivener’s ability to create very different exports from the same content.
Chapters, Headings, and all That
Also watch Literature & Latte’s Compile tutorials. Four videos, 22 minutes, can make a big difference.
Thank you for the links. I’ll watch them again. I’m using Scrivener in Windows, so I don’t have a preview. I followed the video step by step and mine is still turning out wrong. I have all the chapters with scenes as they should be. So frustrating. And yes, I did check for updates. But thank you, anyway.
I did check the inspector and the chapters are all Heading and the scenes are all Sections. Thanks for the suggestion.
Those workflows work, trust me, on both Mac and Windows. Make sure you haven’t missed a few steps.
If documents are appearing out of order that suggests that either (1) your Binder isn’t in the order you think it is or (2) you’re compiling from a Collection that has a different order from the main Binder.
I’m doing it step by step and pausing it. Except I haven’t got a preview button at the bottom. However, I have the latest update when I check.
When I look at the compile window on the right, everything appears to be in order.
You don’t need a preview. Compile to see what will happen.
We can do a Zoom session if you need it.
I really appreciate all your help. I bought the Mac version (I don’t use the Mac for writing because of the smaller screen) and it worked perfectly. I’m going to get new glasses and transition everything to the Mac.
