New name lists for the name generator

How do you add new lists of name to the name generator? I made cvs-files of my name lists (thousands of names, all names in use in Norway as of January 1st), imported them, and scrivener found them. I select my lists from the menu, and still I only get this error:

“No surname lists are selected for inclusion in name generation so no names can be generated. Use the table in the options drawer to select some surname lists to include.”

I suspect it has got to do with the formatting of the lists – or more precisely, to do with the numbering. I have tried to use just names, but that won’t work, neither will names and the precise count of how many bearers there are in Norway. How do you write the names, how do you show which names are more common? In descending order? Do you have to show that in order for Scrivener to be able to use the file? (Otherwise the “obscurity level” doesn’t do anything, I suppose; but does it have to?)

Obscurity level and suchlike doesn’t have any effect on custom lists. Send your custom list to support AT literatureandlatte DOT com, mark the subject title with “for attention of Keith”, and I’ll take a look when I get chance (probably not today though).

Thanks,
Keith

there should be no numbers in your list.

I added 21000 polish surnames and posted them as a txt file earlier.

the text file should be one line that looks like this:

name1,name2,name3,name4.....

or

smith,jackson,ebbers,beyke,szymczak,....

Good luck!
Tomasz Bożydar Szymczak
Mikołaj Sylwester Ciotuszyński

Thanks, I got it now. No numbers, and the encoding is right.
–and since I have all names in Norway, and by no means just Norwegian names, I get the most bizarre combinations, names I wouldn’t have thought of in a million years.
Now, what should this minor character be called? Let’s see…

ARBAZ CROATTO
NEXHDET ROGNLI
TØLLØV PRACEK
AUDNE LØWGREN

… swosh, there goes another hour by… :unamused:

norskemenn2.txt (90.4 KB)
etternavn2.txt (723 KB)

Tusen takk!

Another thing to do: have a list of adjectives (“first names”) and a list of nouns (surnames") and create swear words and/or random descriptions of a character in your story. I have such lists from a different project, you see – so for those of you who understand Norwegian, these were randomly created in The Name Generator

utakknemmelige bever-geisha
omflakkende jøde-flagellant
knoklete klovn-lynsjer
aseksuelle struts-synder
satte kanutt-tjukkas
menederske frille-venninne
latterlige kretiner-gutt
firkanta pornograf-tarm
lugubre lesbe-tilskuer
hovne avføring-potte
lobotomerte trell-tass
dusja casanova-roter
forkludrende libertiner-maur
pedantiske teiting-alkis

EVen less to do with anything than names, but for that reason perhaps even better suited to draw you away from work.

Also, the obscurity level slider works for my lists, since the names are ordered after how commong they are.

And now, ah yes, back to work.

Hej nisto!

De lister med adjektiver og substantiver - kan du mon poste dem online? De er meget brugbare - også for en dansker!

Takk!
Peer

(sorry for the Danish. I only asked nisto to post some Norwegian word lists online…)

Det må sgu gå an

–Men obs, de er ment til en skjellsordmaskin, så det er mange mange negative men ikke alle positive…

The intention is adjective + noun1 + noun2, or even more complicated. In the name generator, though, it works best with adjective as first name and nouns2 as surname.

adjektiv.txt (32.7 KB)
forord.txt (32.6 KB)

I searched the forum for this information but came up empty. Are there directions for creating the new list in a proper format, and importing it into the program.

Thank you,
Gary

Yes, in the user manual (Scrivener > User Manual) - see the final paragraphs in the section on the “Name Generator” (p. 285 in section 20.5 in the manual supplied with version 2.2).

All the best,
Keith
