new user: can I import a WIP?

Hi there,
I am a new user trying out Scrivener (haven’t even gotten through the tutorial yet). I am trying to figure out if I will be able to import my documents and files from a work in progress. Or do I have to start from scratch? What files can Scrivener read? Can it read RTF? (I’m assuming so, if I believe I read it will export files as RTF…) Thing is, I’ve been using Liquid Story Binder. Any chance I can import those, which are mostly, but not all RTF?

Thanks,
Monica

RTF is a good format for this, and given that you’ve already been using a program that encourages smaller files, you should find the transition to be a lot easier than someone that has a 400 page Word file they want to cut up. You may find, after importing, that you wish to tweak the formatting a bit as imported stuff rarely looks like your default formatting settings for new documents made in Scrivener. You can either set your default settings to look like your LSB files, which I presume you are already accustomed to, or you can use the Documents/Convert/Formatting to Default Text Style menu command to fix the imported files to the new format en masse. You may also find you wish to break things up further. I’m no expert at LSB, I’ve only played around with it, so I don’t know to what level of sectioning it works best at, but as you grow accustomed to Scrivener you may find you want things to be even smaller, maybe even down to scenes or less in tricky sections. The Documents/Split/ commands are very useful here. Just put your cursor at the spot where you wish to break the section into two pieces and split away.

Thanks, Amber! (Luckily, in LSB, I worked in scenes, so I should be good on that front.)

I’m sure the tutorial will help too. I better read that, huh?

Yes.

LSB and Scrivener have similar philosophies, so I think you’ll find it very comfortable from a theory standpoint. The interface is quite a bit different though, and this is what the tutorial focuses on.
