newbi: want default font for all projects in notes

Hi and good day,

Just purchased Scrivener, and already stuck - sorry!

But how to set the default font for all projects in notes, right now it’s Cochin 14pt.

Yes I checked the UG:

”1. Application preferences as set in this tab”

but it doesn’t specify which “tab”.

Scrivener-wide formatting defaults are set in the Scrivener -> Preferences -> Formatting pane.

It’s also possible to change these settings for a particular project, using the Project -> Text Preferences pane. The project settings will take precedence over the Scrivener-wise settings.

Well I did visit the ”Scrivener -> Preferences -> Formatting” pane, but it was a visit without a good welcome.

Although I set ’Notes font’ to something else: L Gr. 18 and then started a new project, I was still abandoned with the strange, foreign font- company of Cohin 14, in the central notes writing area.

So far still stuck, maybe you can help.

Did you check the Project -> Text Preferences pane? If you used one of Scrivener’s built-in templates, for example, it might have come with pre-defined notes formatting.

Also, where specifically are you seeing the wrong formatting? Scrivener has a couple of different ways to enter notes.

Hi and good day,

No - nothing checked there, and using the blank document, right out of the box.

But I thought to set a default font & size for all future projects, I understand that such global settings can be overwritten for individual projects.

But I’m not afraid to show (everyone) the preference settings so far:

hope this helps,

I think we probably need to make sure we’re using the same terms, because I could be wrong, but I think you’re using the word ‘notes’ in a way which is non-standard and it’s that which is causing the confusion.

In Scrivener, ‘Notes’ is used to mean the words you enter in the Document Notes or Project Notes section of the Inspector – it does not refer to the text entered in the main Editor. So when you change the “Notes” setting in your screen shot, you’ve changing the font for the words that appear in the Inspector, not in the main Editor. (Also, it will only change them for new documents, not currently existing ones, I think).

The way to change the default text format for new documents (again, it won’t change existing documents in any existing project – see below), is to click on the button marked ‘Aa’ in the same preference pane (it’s directly under the words ‘Main Text Style’). That will bring up the fonts dialog box so you can make your changes.

An alternative way is to do the same thing is to write some text in an editor, highlight the text and then change the font there (you can use the drop down list that your left hand arrow is point to). Make any other changes that you want at the same time (e.g. line spacing, alignment and so on), so that the editor looks the way you want all new documents to look. Then go to the same preference panel and click the button that your right hand arrow is pointing to (“Use Formatting in Current Editor”). You will see the text in the preference panel (beginning “Good writers have two things…”) change accordingly and new documents will be in this format.

Once you’ve got the settings exactly the way you want them, then you can convert any previous document to this format easily. Simply highlight the documents you want to convert in the Binder, then use the menu option Documents > Convert > Convert Formatting to Default Text Style…

Hope this helps – it’s actually very quick and easy to do once you’ve got the hang of it.

Yes -
Thank you!
