I prefer to use an indented style. So I created “Normal” which has a roughly a 3 em indent.
If I make a selection and number this. It totally overrides my indent, and instead numbers with the numbers outdented and the block Indented about half an inch. However the format still says that it’s “Normal”.
If I then choose numbering None after selecting some of the numbered paragraph, it unnumbers ALL of them.
AND
All ruler inforomation is lost.

Yes. I can redefine default style to my preferences. I may end up doing that.

What I expect to happen:
Numbering becasue a trait of that paragraph. Since I didn’t specfiy a different style, I would expect the numbering to start where the first para started, then the actual first para to be indented one more tab stap.
When I un-number, I expect the paragraph to go back to it’s previous format
My work-around:

RESELECT text

Reset to normal.
I also dislike that ruler lines are not saved with a style. Nor are bullet’s numbering. This makes it harder to maintain consistent formating in a long document.
