I am running XP SP3, with Word 2003 and Outlook 2003 installed, and th latest Scrivener trial downloaded and installed yesderday).
Here is the sequence of events for my setup:
With Word 2003 and Outlook 2003 NOT running, I open Scrivener. Two icons (Scrivener - Tutorial; and Scrivener Trial Version) open up in the task-bar. WINWORD.EXE immediately appears in the Task Manager’s list of processes, but does not appear in TM’s list of open applications; nor is it visible as an open program on the display or as an icon in the task-bar.
The appearance of WINWORD.EXE in the TM is accompanied by the following message box:
“Microsoft Offie Word
The file Normal.dot already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file”
Yes No Cancel
[At this point I close the trial Version icon by selecting “Try” in the Scrivener Trial Version window in order to reduce screen clutter.]
Selecting “NO” in answer to the MS message takes me to a further screen inviting me to save normal.dot as a document template in the Templates folder. But before I can do so, this window is overlayed by another one inviting me to save normal dot in one of my (unrelated) document folders as a Word document. When I back out of the latter by opting for “Cancel”, it then invites me to save Normal.dot as a Document template at the same location. When I select “Cancel” again it presents me with a blank screen entitled "Microsoft Word. When I attempt to close this window by clicking on the top RHS “X”, a new Microsoft Word message box appears, with the following notice:
“Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal.dot. Do you want to save those changes?”
Show Help >>
Yes No Cancel
When I select “No” Word closes.
Sorry for the laborious detail, but hope it may help track down the problem.
As is the case with most any program, launching that program often involves the processing of several files. Based what I’m hearing, it sounds like there is a file that Scrivener is opening/accessing that has a file extension that is associated to Word (even though it might be a Scrivener file).
One such example is the RTF file type which Scrivener uses but is often associated to Microsoft Word, even though it’s the basis of Scrivener data. Could the RTF format be causing some system confusion? On my system, it is associated to Word but it doesn’t cause Word to launch. Could there be another file that Scrivener is touching that is internally associated with Word?
I also experienced the nomal.dot problems described in these threads. I am on Windows 7, one computer with Office 2010 and another with Office 2007. I never use RTF files in Microsoft Word so I went to the Default Programs link on the Start Menu and chose “Associate a file type or protocol with a program”. Then I scrolled to RTF and changed the default program to open rft files to be Scrivener. That seems to have fixed it. I just installed Scrivener on a 3rd computer, an old XP laptop. I don’t know if I have the problem on that computer. Office 2003 is installed on it. If I do see the problem, It is possible to change file associations on XP too - but you do it differently. (From the folder options menu maybe - I don’t remember and don’t want to boot up that computer). Hope this continues to work for me. It’s worth a try for those having the problem.
Hmm, thanks for the hint,
but it’s not working here. I did not have RTF assigned to Word in the first place, but to another 3rd party freeware. But then again, I am not on Win7 but on Vista.
Update to my previous post. Changing the default program for .rft files in Windows 7 seemed to have fixed the problem yesterday in that in spite of using both Scrivener and Microsoft Word at various times during the day, I had no problems with the normal.dot yesterday.
Then this morning, after rebooting my computer, I opened a Microsoft Word document and got the message that normal.dot had not been saved. I still think I’ve seen an improvement but it’s not really the total fix I’d hoped. Sorry.
FYI, I downloaded Scrivener today and this happened the first time I opened it.
(I’d had the trial version on this computer before but had uninstalled it because of exactly this problem, which is really annoying. Anyway, because of the previous install, today’s install did open the last project I worked on when I had the trial version before.)
I have scrivener on an XP machine and this doesn’t happen there.
Does the version I got today include the fix in that beta referenced? Or should I be using the beta?
