Ongoing confusion re section layouts

I think Compiling several times is the norm. You cannot expect to get everything right in one go, can you? Compile early and Compile often to perfect your settings, so when the time comes to create output, you’re ready to go.

A Section Type determines what a Section is, like Part, Chapter, or Scene. But other Section Types, are possible, like Index Entry, Epigraphs, Letter, etc. Create your own Section Types in the Project Settings.

A specific Section Type is coupled with a specific formatting, using a Section Layout. Every Section Layout can be formatted different. Predefined Compile Formats have already formatting set up. You can choose from several Section Layouts. Creating your own Section Layouts by double-Clicking the Compile Format you’re using in the left column of the Compile Overview window.

To know which Section Type apllies with formatting, it’s necessary to link a Section Type to a Section Layout. This is done in the Dialog called with the button “Apply Section Layouts to Section Types” in the center column of the Compile Overview window.

Hope this helps

“Why does my Compiled project look like this?” – Check the Compile Format settings, and especially the Section Layouts.

“Why isn’t it including half my project?” – Start by checking the Contents pane in the main Compile screen, especially making sure that you haven’t enabled a filter.

I’m not sure how a separate diagnostic tool would help. You would still need a way to tell it what you wanted, presumably using an interface very similar to the existing one.
