Online Version (?)

Scrivener Scrivener for Windows

So due to the quarantine I’ve had to mostly use a relative’s computer. I’m not allowed to download software, which normally wouldn’t be a problem, but I’m going through Scrivener and writing withdrawals. Is there any way for some sort of “online” version of Scrivener that wouldn’t require a download?

I hope this might be some sort of possibility in the future…

This is a frequent question, and L&L has indicated they have no plans to produce an online version.

But I’ll bet the OP would do well with an existing version of Scrivener via remote desktop. There should be a way to provision and price this as servers can run multiple Windows sessions on a single multi-core chip. (Also at least one beta tester would enjoy having an economical way to ascertain some behavior on the Mac version, or simply to try it out.)

Thanks for the responses. I had a feeling that it probably wasn’t something they were working on/had available. Unfortunately, Remote Desktop wouldn’t have helped my situation in the OP.

(Thankfully I’m back home, and no longer have to worry about the previous situation.)

I also didn’t realize that this was a common question. Is there a way to find out what common questions that ask for things there are no plans for?

(I’m relatively new to these forums.)

Theoretically, all requests for fun useful new features would be in the Wish List. But requests are frequently posted elsewhere (as this post was), so no, unfortunately, there really isn’t a specific list available. At least none that I can think of.

That’s a shame, as it would solve the vaporware problem of Scrivener 3 for Windows, as promised all the way back in 2017: “We don’t have a specific release date yet, other than stating Scrivener 3 for Windows will be available during Q2 in 2019.”

On second thought, most writers prefer standalone software in case they’re snuggled in their cabin or tent, well away from WiFi, and want to continue writing.

Sadly, I spent all of my $100 Christmas money in 2017 on Scrivener and Aeon Timeline, as the interaction between then both would have helped me solve my greatest hurdle, that of keeping my time-traveling timeline straight.

So, here we are in 2020, 2-1/2 years later, still no Scrivener 3 for Windows.

When did you say it would be ready, again? 2028?

How about a REFUND, there Scrivener? Can you get me a refund for Aeon Timeline, too???

Better yet:

  1. Don’t make promises you’re unable to keep
  2. If you can’t make a deadline, be HONEST about it and OFFER to refund people’s hard-earned money. We writers do NOT make much of that, you know!

But you do have Scrivener, don’t you? You paid for version 1, didn’t you?

Version 3 beta is available for download, if you want to upgrade…

There is very much a Scrivener 3 for Windows Release Candidate. And because it’s not fully released yet, you don’t even require a license to use it and see if it’s going to meet your needs.

When you purchased your bundle, you purchased it for the current version (1.9.x) which you still have access to today. As far as I know, Aeon Timline works with Scrivener 1.9.x. And if you are correct about when you purchased it, you are within the cutoff for getting a free upgrade to Scrivener 3 for Windows when it does finally release – so what, exactly, have you lost out on?
