Option to correct a spelling mistake

My father, an 86-year old aspiring author, is rather fat-fingered as a typist and is having problems with the spelling function in Scrivener. Sometimes the word the spell check picks up is so mangled that there is no correct choice available in the UI. I thought there would be a way to retype the correction directly from within the spelling dialog but I can’t figure it out. He is using V. 1.9.0.0.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The spell checking window doesn’t have the option to edit what it finds misspelled, but you can just close that window and the misspelled word will still be selected. Type the replacement word (you don’t even have to hit the delete key), and then hit CTRL-G, CTRL-Q to resume the spell check.
