I updated to the new osx this week. Now all my quotation marks and apostrophes are stripped out. I can’t even TYPE in a quotation mark or apostrophe. The same thing has happened in Pages so I think it’s likely from the upgrade but I’m not sure. I’m a little panicked because I’ll get getting notes back from my editor in a day or two and will need to plunge into revisions. Any idea how to fix this?

This sounds like a corrupt font - or fonts. First, try changing the font to something else, to see if that helps. If it does, then there is definitely a font problem. Even if not, though, it is definitely worth checking the Font Book program to see if you have any font problems.
