Overriding Text Formatting

I’m trying to override the text formatting for a specific project. I:

Select Project/Text Preferences…
Check Override text formatting for this project
Select Body in the presets
Set Paragraph Spacing, Before to 0. It used to be 6.0
The change is reflected in the example text.
Press OK
Return to the document and apply the style and see no change
Return to Project/Text Preferences…
See my changes still reflected in example text
Select Body in the presets
Example text returns to original format (i.e., 6.0 paragraph spacing)

Am I doing something wrong or it that not how it works? The user manual wasn’t clear to me on the subject.

The project I’m trying to change contains MMD formatting commands so I don’t need any of my standard formatting.
Thanks for any help,
Curt

Hello,

What do you mean by returning to the text and “apply the style”? There are no styles in Scrivener. The Text Preferences determine the default formatting of new documents you create in the project (overriding the default formatting for new documents that is set in the global Preferences). So any new documents you create will use that format. If you want to apply the format to an existing document, select the document and use Documents > Convert > Formatting to Default Style.

If you want to change the presets, then select some text in the editor that has the formatting from which you want to create (or update) a preset, and use the Format > Formatting menu.

Hope that helps.

All the best,
Keith

By applying a style, I mean selecting some text and choosing one of the presets, in my case ‘Body’. My apologies for using an inappropriate word. You say it only works in new documents so I tried this:

In an existing document, select “Project/Text Preferences…”
Check “Override text formatting for this project”
Select “Body” in the presets
Set Paragraph Spacing, Before to 0. It used to be 6.0
The change is reflected in the example text.
Press OK
Create a new document
Type in some text and select it.
Choose “Body” from the presets.
The formatting applied is from the global setting.

I tried Documents > Convert > Formatting to Default Style to an exiting document and it appears to work. However, if I select some text and choose the “Body” preset, it applies the global formatting. Is there only one override format for a project? That is, you can’t over ride “Body”, “Heading”, “Title”, etc. with different formatting.
