Page numbers in 'compile for PDF' (for CreateSpace)?

I’m compiling a version of my book in PDF to upload it to CreateSpace for a print-on-demand paperback.

I’d like the page numbers to skip the title page, copyright page, contents page and possibly also the “about the author” credits, etc at the end. Can’t see how to do this on the Compile dialogue - is it staring me straight in the face?

In fact, maybe it should be compiled without page numbers, since CreateSpace says it adds page numbers?

I think it’s okay to add the page numbers, seeing as the CreateSpace Word templates have page numbers in them, but you’d have to check that.

Regarding getting the page numbers to skip the front pages, there are a couple of ways of doing this, but they are both found in the “Page Settings” pane of Compile. There, you will need to select “First Pages” and tick “Different first pages header/footer” if that’s not ticked already. Then make sure that the header and footer in the “First Pages” pane is set up as you would like them to appear on your title page, copyright page and so on (you will probably want to leave all the fields blank, so that there is no header or footer on these pages). And make sure that the “Header and Footer” pane contains the header and footer you would like on other pages (and do the same for “Facing Pages” if you are using different recto/verso page headers and footers).

Once you’ve got that set up, return to the “First Pages” pane of “Page Settings”. There you will find a pop up button labelled “Start regular header and footer on:”. You use this to tell Scrivener how many pages at the start of the manuscript should use the “First Pages” header and footer. There are two ways of approaching this:

  1. If you know exactly how many pages there are at the front of the book, then just select the appropriate number. For instance, if you have four pages at the start of the book - title page, copyright page, contents page and “about the author”, then you would pick “5” here, telling Scrivener to start the regular header and footer on page 5 and use the “First Pages” header and footer for the first four pages.

  2. If you’re not sure how many pages there will be at the front of the book, then it is best to stash all of the front matter pages - the title page, copyright page, contents page and so on - in a separate folder outside of the Draft folder, for instance in a folder called “Front Matter” or “First Pages”. Then, in the “Contents” pane of Compile, you would tick “Add front matter” at the bottom, and select the folder that contains your first pages in the pop-up button next to this tick-box. Then, back under “Page Settings” -> “First Pages”, you would choose “Automatic” next to “Start regular header and footer on:”. “Automatic” tells Scrivener to start the regular header and footer straight after any pages that were in the separate front matter folder.

I hope that makes sense!

All the best,
Keith

Thanks, Keith. Couldn’t see how to set up the header and footer to be blank, and didn’t bother about having no numbers on the last pages. Otherwise this worked well - starting the page numbers on page 4 got rid of them on the first three pages.

One problem - the running title is on the top right in all cases, rather than the top left on even pages and the top right on odd pages. I suppose there’s no way to change this? (I tried outputting for print, then saving as PDF, but it didn’t change this setting.)

Turns out that CreateSpace has a Word template; used that instead. Thank you for the help, though.

Even though you’ve gone with the Word template:

To set up the header and footer to be blank, you just delete any content in the header and footer fields in “Page Settings”.

For this, you would use “Facing Pages”, tick the “Use facing pages” box, and then set up the verso page header and footer in the “Facing Pages” area and the recto page header and footer in the regular “Header and footer” area.
