Pages '08 good enough?

Try this link, Tim:

apple.com/iwork/trial/

Like you, I couldn’t find it on the Apple site, but I googled and found this on the Macupdate site.

It’s a huge file, BTW.

Best.

Thanks, crimewriter!

no problem… export to word and use the WIN machine to print… Hell should do that soon, and let you know if WORD '07 does this well.

You’d be amazed at some of the bugs I found while processing the last things in the Manual…

:unamused:

There are days I want to chuck that gaming machine… but hey… it also does 3D much faster than the macbook…

But yes, I tried exporting RTF and DOC and the footnotes and other notes were gone… I will probably do this as a PDF…

For those looking for a spreadsheet application, tables may be a nice solution as well – if there is no need in the other iWork applications…

Maria

that it exports fine with footnotes to neo-office, which is free.

neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php

No, it will not do notes… the note handling capabilties of Open Office are lacking

And yes, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow I will try this with Word seven, which resides on the WIN machine (and believe it or not, I use it for… text layout)

keeps both notes and footnotes intact.

So now I know what I have to do…

I really like Tables. I like the interface and it really works well for me. I also have iWork08, but although Numbers seems good in many ways, I don’t really want the complexity of the page-layout style of operation.
And I’m really happy to support another individual developer who, like Keith, is also an all-round good guy, responsive and helpful. The only thing that I actually want in it that he hasn’t implemented yet is LinkBack, but I’ll keep pushing.

Why would Apple leave out an auto-save feature in Pages?

If you want to use Pages for it’s layouting capabilities and need your footnotes intact, just open the exported Scrivener .rtf file in Neooffice and resave it as a Word .doc file… Pages imports them with the footnotes intact… it’s what I always do  works for me…

NeoOffice allows you to record macros, so presumably you could create a macro to do this if it’s something you do frequently.

I took a hard look at Pages but it lacks the ability to do autonumbering by inserting a field (so you could autonumber your chapters in a manuscript, which I’ve done for years in Word) and it doesn’t have a split-screen view which is handy during rewriting. Pages is good–but it’s not there yet, at least for me.

Keynote and Numbers are terrific, though.

Myself for page layout I use Indesign 5 (CS3). I do needed for a lot of the work I do and as far as a page layout program it is an Industry standard and in My opinion the best BUT for a casual user it is a little too powerful and extensive for an average user to use only on occasion and can be expensive to boot.

As far as Pages I dunno really. Most anyone who uses pages send me PDF’s for imposition on small print jobs etc?

Can’t remember if there is a trial version or not but I would say download the trial and give it a whirl to see if it fits your needs.
