Problem with registration on new computer

I bought Scrivener last year(or the year before) after using the NaNoWriMo trial and installed it on my Windows 7 laptop. I used it happily, keeping my back up files on Dropbox. Well, that computer died a horrible death a few weeks ago, and I’m just now trying to install Scrivener on my new laptop, which unfortunately is running Windows 8.1. It is a laptop, not a tablet.

I followed the directions in my original purchase confirmation email, and after installing, I put in my name and registration key. It said my installation was verified (I think that is what it said. The box went away.) Then it said, in a very long paragraph, that initiating wasn’t complete, and it would keep trying with the servers. Not sure on that one. It went by very fast.

Now the program is stuck with the registration window up. I can’t close it. I can’t close Scrivener. It just dings if I touch it.

What did I do wrong? Better yet, how do I fix it?

It sounds like the activation process froze. Quit Scrivener via the Task Manager, then try rebooting into Safe Mode with Networking and launch Scrivener there to try the activation process. There’ve been a couple cases where the eSellerate activation has hung like this and usually completing the process in Safe Mode works to get around it. Once Scrivener is activated, you’ll be able to boot normally and not need to repeat the process.
