Quickreference windows

I often work on my laptop, which means a small screen, so keeping a quickreference window open, floating or otherwise, takes up too much screen real estate. Even with a bigger monitor attached, this can sometimes be problematic. So I’d really like to be able to minimize Quickreference windows. Though the Mac window control buttons are not present in them, there is a command for this, although it is grayed out for Quickreference windows.

I often need to refer to one or more Quickreference windows periodically while working, but I don’t need or want them all the time. Implementing this long-time feature of the Mac OS would be a boon.

If you disable the HUD style, QR windows can be minimised.

Thanks. I tried that and it didn’t seem to work. Turns out you have to change the preference, quit and restart Scrivener for it to take effect.

Yes, that’s down to a limitation in the window system, you can’t change how a window acts and looks once it has been created. They are only created once per session, so you have to reload the project to recreate them.

I don’t have to reload the project, I just have to reload the QR windows. I can have some ordinary pop-ups and some HUD ones open at the same time because the project doesn’t force me to reload when I make a change in Preferences. Are my Macs behaving abnormally in some way?

Basically when you close a QR panel it is just hidden, not destroyed. So if it was built with the HUD look, when you call the window back up for that document, it remains in HUD view. But if you call up a window for another document that you’ve not yet opened a QR panel for, then it takes on the new look because it didn’t exist yet. Reloading the project destroys all QR panels, and thus when you reload, they all take on the new settings (if you have the preference set to retain open QR panels).

Naturally it’s easier to just say: reload your project after changing this setting.
