I want to write something like “as seen on page X”, where X is the page number where a certain text document starts. What should I use – a placeholder? But which one and where to put it?
Thanks.

Check out Creating Cross-References for your Readers, in section §10.1.4, pg. 216. On the following page is a yellow tip box on how to include page numbers in your references.
It is the same technique used by the Edit ▸ Copy Special ▸ Copy Documents as ToC.
