Regular big vertical gaps -- how to remove?

Hello! The Scrivener editor is inserting big vertical gaps into my text on the screen and I can’t make it go away.

It’s not paragraph spacing, because the gaps can be in mid-paragraph. It looks like it’s trying to paginate.

It’s not a problem with embedded formatting in the text, because it recurs when I paste pure ASCII (from a text editor) into a new document window.

This is version 3.2.3, but it is an old project, whose origins I cannot remember. It says at the top of the binder that it’s using novel formatting (with a triangular warning symbol that I can’t decode). But even if I try to “convert” the document to default text, the spacing persists.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

Have you tried using Paste and Match Style, instead of Paste when copying from an outside source and pasting into a Scrivener document?

Try right-clicking anywhere in the text, and see if there is a “Table” submenu at the top. If you see that, then use the “Remove Table” command at the bottom of it.

Invisible tables can sometimes be pasted in (often from websites), and then lurk around making things weird. Even plain-text paste won’t work because you’d be pasting that into a cell of the table.

Otherwise, check to make sure page view isn’t on, with View ▸ Text Editing ▸ Hide Page View (it’ll be “Show” instead of “Hide” if it is enabled).

Oh, let me clarify my just-previous message… (1) I tried “Paste and Match Style” with ASCII text and the vertical spacing was there after the paste. (2) I tried the right-mouse click to see if there was a “Table” submenu, and there was not.

BUT, I did View / Text Editing / Hide Page View and that fixed it! Good call! Thank you very much!

Hmm. Check and see if Format → Paragraph → Keep With Next is applied near (either above or below) where the breaks were. Overuse of that command can lead to weird page breaks, and if that’s the problem it will reappear when you Compile.

Maybe you are (accidentally) in Page Layout View. There is a toggle for this on the Scrivener toolbar.
