Return Key - automatic tabbing

A question and a subsequent suggestion:

When one presses the return key to go to a new line, it automatically indents the next line, to what I presume to be indicative of a new paragraph. I’m first wondering if there’s a way to change the degree of ‘automatic’ indentation. According MLA standards, new paragraphs should be tabbed a certain length. I know I could always just press the tab key, but it would be nice if there were a way to set this manually so it automatically tabs to the right amount of indentation. I know I could also fiddle around with the triangles and bars on the ruler, but I haven’t quite figured all that out.

But … that is precisely what those triangles and bars are there for, aren’t they? IMHO, TABs are not a good way to indent. They will probably make your compile setting produce obscure results.

You can edit the positions of the indents and margins under Preferences|Formatting and they will apply to all you new documents.

Hope this helps!

Thanks r6d2, that solved my issue. I set the bar at .5 inches on the top in the preferences and that did the trick.
