Save as? Backup to?

As a scrivener user, I’d like to have the same flexibility and security with scapple.

  1. ‘Save as’ option. A basic, that is not in my version. I want to be able to save in multiple locations just in case. The only option I have is ‘save.’

  2. A ‘backup to’ option as per scrivener. Would be ideal to have the automatic security.

Which version of OS-X are you using? 10.10 and, if I remember rightly 10.9 don’t provide for “Save As”, the route is “Duplicate --> Save” (Shift-Cmd-S --> Cmd-S). And yes, irritating is the word!

As for automatic back-ups, I see your point, but as I haven’t yet used Scapple for anything serious — and who knows if I ever will — it hasn’t been on my agenda.

This does work, thanks - but it’s a pest.

I’ve found myself using scapple for plotting out.

Scrivener is great, but to keep track of progress through the plotting stage I have discovered the joys of being able to freely move things around, and properly visualize the progression of the story. Now all I need is an external monitor to really do it justice. A 13" screen is not cutting it.

First, on the subject of automatic backups…

Scapple leverages a Mac OS X feature called “Versions”. File->Revert To->Browse All Versions lets you look at past iterations of the document. These are your automatic backups, built in by the OS, not by Keith.

Save As vs Duplicate:

Hold down the OPT key while you’re in the File menu. You’ll see “Duplicate” change to “Save As”. This is standard for almost all Mac OS X programs (Pages, Numbers, Text Edit, etc…); Scrivener (always) being the exception.

But in my opinion, Duplicate is safer and easier. Why? Because Save As closes the original and puts you into the new copy. With Duplicate you do…
Shift-Cmd-S --> [type new name and hit ENTER] --> Cmd-W
Now you’re back in the original, having just saved a copy in the same location.

The alternative, using Save As:
Shift-Opt-Cmd-S --> [type in new name and hit ENTER] --> Cmd-W --> Cmd-O, click on original document --> Cmd-O

Try them both, see which one is really more convenient.

I’ve seen far too many people coming here (mostly for Scrivener help) because they confused the new “Save As” copy with the original and continued work in the copy. All their changes “were lost” because they closed the application and later re-opened the original (which lacked the last session’s work). Even worse, some don’t notice their recent changes have gone missing and continue work as if a new chapter or a bunch of edits were present in the original. Really confusing!

Scrivener’s “Backup To” is analogous “Duplicate”, which is why I’ll always recommend both of those over “Save As” for keeping milestone backups.

Thanks Robert - didn’t know the option option.

And - will keep an eye on versions - I do what I can to avoid getting the sweats over ‘lost’ work. Trying to consign those to the bad old days.
