Saving A Set Of Custom Columns For Each Folder In Outline

Is it possible to save custom columns (in outline view) so that every time you go to a particular document /folder in the binder, it appears with a particular set of columns assigned to it?

At the moment, the columns you select for one folder, appear for all folders.

I think the function to create columns with meta-data has many many uses, so I have long list of columns now. But atm I have not found any way to assign a particular selection of columns to a given folder. This means I have to reassign which columns I wish to appear each time I go to a new folder - where I need a different set of columns, then when I return to the previous folder I have to manually revert to the set of columns I had before.

Is there a way to set up “Views” i.e. to create a particular collection of columns, which could then be assigned to a given folder - and every time you go back to that folder it would keep that column selection, until one chose to assign a new “view” to it?

Thanks

(Scrivener is amazing! I’m a novice on Macs, and Scrivener…just discovering all the possibilities. I think its one of the best pieces of software ever created!)

There is a way to save layouts. Use the Window/Layouts/Manage Layouts... menu command to set them up. Basically just organise the window how you’ll want it to appear when you select the layout and then add it to the list using the + button. You’ll want to enable “Save outliner and corkboard settings” for columns to be a part of the layout’s definition. These are always saved, the checkbox just tells Scrivener to use the settings when you select that layout. Layouts can be selected in that same menu, or from the toolbar (third icon from the left by default; click and hold to view the layout list, click once to open the management window).

Do note this feature is fairly aggressive however. It saves just about everything you can do with a project window. Where the split divider is, how big the window itself is, even where it is on the screen, if you are on Lion—whether it is full screen or not, and much much more. So this particular feature would not be useful at all for attaching to individual groups in the binder, as that would be rather chaotic.

So the basic answer to your first question is: yes you can save outliner columns and recall them later, and if you tend to not move your window around a lot or change the layout, it could be useful as a quick outliner column switching mechanism. It’s not designed to be a precision tool like that though, so you might run into problems where the inspector reverts to open/closed, etc. when you didn’t want it to. It’s more designed for setting up large workflows.

Useful to know, AmberV, thank you for the input. I will have a look at it. But given that you say

I am not sure if it will serve as a solution for rapidly configuring different sets of columns, as one moves, back and forth from one item in the binder to another.

It would be nice if there was a function that allowed one to save a selection of columns, under a name, on that menu where the list of columns appears. Then one could rapidly switch from one set of data to another.

So a lot of the time I only want a certain few Custom Meta Data columns I’ve created, and this depends on which aspect of the project I’m working on.
So it would be useful to be able to select which columns are visible under specific Folders, instead of having it globally on or off.

Edit: I just checked out the Scrivener 3 beta and don’t believe its in this unless I’m mistaken.

I suggest this because currently you either show all custom Outliner columns or hide ones your not using. But then thats going to get difficult to remember whats what.
Maybe there could be an option when you create a folder, what Meta-data columns you want to show under it.
