I am new to scrivener. That whole thing in windows where there are all those other files being saved at the same time is really, really confusing when saving. Also, I am not certain when I am saving whether I am supposed to put on the .scriv or the .scrivx extension, or no extension at all.
Also, almost 90% of the time when I am saving it tells me I am not allowed to save in the .scriv folder. AAAAARRRGGGHHHHH
Who designed this saving system? I need help, please. 90% of the time when I open a project it gives me an error and tells me files may have not have brought over, but then it opens. Oh my God in the tutorial they spent like two sentences talking about saving. With the number of problems I have had they probably should have devoted a whole chapter to saving. Is there any type of support with scrivener where I can have an expert surf from support onto my desktop and explain to me what is going on? Thank you.
One, look at file> options then look at backup section. I back up as zip file because can save on Dropbox and when zip a file all the relevant data is in the zip file. You scrivener file you open project is scrivx file within project folder. When you save/ backup you backup all project files+ scrivx file as well.
Backup folder is where you decide to save backups and how many copies. If say 5 backups then when get to6th backup it overwrites first backup.
The part that is probably confusing you some is that a Scrivener “file” (project) is really a collection of files in a folder. You need to have the whole folder available for the project to work properly.
The .scriv folder is your project. Just pretend it’s a file and not a folder and you should be good to go.
Since Scrivener is already saving your project when you don’t touch a key for two seconds, and backups are created when closing a Project, saving your projects manually isn’t really necessary.
Using the Save as menu option often creates more problems than it generates security, because a copy of the entire project folder is created. You can’t save a Project in it’s own project folder, either.
In Windows, Onedrive may copy your project file to the Cloud already as a backup copy, and by default, Scrivener will generate the five most recent automatic backups automatically when closing the project.
Solutions are to rely on Scrivener to keep your writing save and don’t save your project unnecessary, and if you really want an extra copy of your project for savekeeping, to save it to a totally different location like a USB-drive.
Hope this helps
