Scrivener 1 documents updated to scrivener 3 will only open tutorial

After upgrading toi scrivenr 3, all the documents that I have saved from scrivener 2 prompt me to convert to scrivener 3. After doing so, Scrivener 3 will only open the tutorial. I also downloaded the legacy file for scrivenr 2 but it will not open the document as it has been converted to a scrivener 3 document, neither 2 or 3 will open the file.

By what method are you trying to open the old project?

A case of wrong default app?

And just to clarify so that it doesn’t get confused for Mac : there never was a V2 under Windows…
Are we talking V1 and V3?

Also, a V1 compatible copy of the project should have been created upon conversion.

There’s a good chance that @HOZEN is trying to open the zip backup in Scrivener. They have to unzip it first. But that’s the V1 version anyway.

I have doubts… → “prompt me”
But, but but, perhaps trying to open from the zip content preview ?
. . . . . .

I don’t recall the copy being made upon conversion to be zipped.
Although I can’t be sure. Been way too long since I last converted a project, but I’ll look and see if I have one somewhere.

[EDIT] The copy made is not zipped. It only makes a copy of the project’s folder and add “Backup” to the name of the folder (leaving the scrivx file untouched).

The only other thing I can think of at this point is that the user would be trying to open the wrong version in V3, and then the right version (so the same one) in V1, but the default app being V3…
Or it is a cloud thing (again).

I tried opening the file by clicking on it in the folder as well as navigating to the folder through the in-app open function.

I can confirm the file was not zipped. When I open the folder, i still see all the info intact on the files, icons, settings and snapshots folder

Have you tried navigating to this specific version (the one with “Backup” now added to the name) using “open” from V1’s menu ?
That should take care of that, and let you know you lost nothing. (You didn’t by the way. If you are worried, don’t be.) – Although now would be a wonderful time to make a backup, somewhere that is not your computer, if you haven’t already.

Now, last time I tried to have both versions installed, one of them refused to work. (I don’t recall which.)

You said you reinstalled V1, so I’ll assume that you had uninstalled it (?)
Did you try opening a project in V3 then ? While V3 was the only version installed ?

Also, what exactly happens when trying to open a project in V3 for the first time ? It clones it (you just confirmed that (?)), but then what ? Nothing ?

See if you can open this one ?

I did, It opens the tutorial

Version 1 was on an old computer, When trying to open on the new computer, I downloaded v3 not realizing the difference. That is when v3 told me to update the file. Every attempt to open it from source folder or app will only open the tutorial. That was a few days ago. Today I reinstalled v1 and the original file is saying the project you are trying to open was saved or created on a newer version…
I did uninstall v3 so on v1 in installed.

I uninstalled version 1 again and reinstalled v3. the blank project file sent by @Vincent_Vincent opened fine as do a few other of my projects. this current project still only opens the tutorial

Here is what I got trying to open your project:

Then Scrivener rather opened the last project I had open before that. (One of mine)

[EDIT] Now this is getting really weird : This time I clicked “Make a copy” and as it turns out (or very so it seems), you project is a copy of the tutorial…
. . . . . . . .

Now trying the V1 version of it…

Same result. Except it opened right away, and didn’t ask me to upgrade it to V3. Meaning both were already V3. (They also have both the exact same size on disk. 44175 bytes)
Both of these are V3:

It ain’t. But somehow the tutorial replaced its content. When you open it, does it say your project’s name in the top left corner ? Here it does.

Likely your issue predates.

I think you should open a ticket with LL.

They are currently off for the holidays though… But who knows ?

Make sure to link to this thread in the message.

Given the fact that both version you uploaded here are in the V3 format, hopefully you still have the real V1 version of your project somewhere.
I say you find it and make a backup of it before doing anything else.
Same goes for your other projects.
