Scrivener 2.9

I would like to confirm that the only difference between Scrivener 2.9 and 2.81 is the added ability to unlock the software with a direct-sale Scrivener v3 serial number.

Yes, that’s correct. Since we are no longer selling Scrivener 2 (only) licenses, the goal is to allow users with legacy hardware to buy now and upgrade later if they choose.

Is 2.9 available under the Check for Updates… menu command? Over here that’s telling me that 2.8.1 is the most up to date version. Same with Scapple 1.2 earlier, though I downloaded 1.3 from the web store and that installed over 1.2 just fine

The Scapple 1.3 auto-updater only went up a few hours ago - it was available to download directly several hours before.

Scrivener 2.9 is not going to be an auto-update notification, because it is identical to 2.8.1 except for the ability to use a Scrivener 3 licence to run it. There will be a notification bout 3.0’s release instead.

All the best,
Keith

Great, thanks Keith

Goodness me, did you really have to make Scrivener 3 solely for OS X 10.13, and discard even users of the preceding OS X, i.e. El Capitan? Seems extraordinarily short sighted.

Well, El Capitan (10.11) is now two years / versions old (not one), and Sierra introduced new features / capabilities which V3 takes advantage of – it’s an extensive rewrite of the V2 program, which couldn’t do so, apparently. V3 runs very well on Sierra (10.12).

The developers won’t have done it on a whim, but on an analysis of whether including legacy compatibility to cater for El Capitan would delay the release of V3 unreasonably.

Don’t forget, you can install Sierra and High Sierra on machines which are six years old or more.

And users of older system versions are hardly abandoned, when the legacy versions are still available for download, and Scrivener 2.9 can be opened with a Scrivener 3 key.

Hello,

I hope somebody can provide some guidance or suggestions for the following situation:

I am running macOS 10.11.6 (El Capitan) with Scrivener 2.8.0 and iOS 10.2.1 with Scrivener 1.1.2.
For various reasons I don’t want to upgrade to either iOS 11 or macOS High Sierra until next summer. This means I cannot upgrade to Scrivener v3.

So, the questions:

Should I update Scrivener on my Mac to version 2.8.1.2 (this is what comes up in the Update window) or to version 2.9?

Do I understand it correctly that downloading v2.9 now will cost money but will allow me to install v3 free when I upgrade to macOS 10.13 (and is otherwise identical to v2.8.1) ?

Are there any compatibility issues (especially in syncing) foreseen between any pre-version-3 Scrivener on the mac and the Scrivener iOS app (any current or upcoming version)?

Thanks,
Dee

A Scrivener 3 license key will cost the same amount of money whether you buy it now or next year.

Scrivener 2.9 can accept either a Scrivener 2 or a Scrivener 3 license key. It is otherwise completely identical to Scrivener 2.8,1.2 Scrivener 2.8.1.2 has important bug fixes relative to Scrivener 2.8, though. So yes, I would recommend upgrading to 2.8.1.2 at least.

iOS Scrivener works with all versions of Scrivener from 2.8 on. We have no plans to drop support for Scrivener 2.8, but of course have no control over what Apple might do. I would recommend all iOS Scrivener users install the latest version, iOS Scrivener 1.1.5, due to changes and bug fixes related to the Dropbox API.

Thank you, Katherine, it’s all clear and sounds good!
