Scrivener freezes and greys out

I’m adding my voice to the Scrivener freezing problem.

Scrivener recently started freezing a minute or so after opening my main file which is huge (about 200k words, plus notes, but almost no images). It also freezes when I open my background info (abot 20k words), so it’s not a file size issue. This mostly happens when I briefly switch to another window on my second screen.

There are three possible causes on my end but I have no idea how to solve this or if they’re even relevant at all.

  1. I renamed the project and the .scriv file, removed the year from both filenames. They open just fine, and when I restart Scrivener, I can usually keep working without any problem.
  2. I recently added another Java version.
  3. I’m working on PC with Win 10 installed but that was never a problem before.

I’d be very grateful if someone could point me in a direction to fix this. I’ve been working with Scrivener for years and I really don’t want to switch to something else.

Correction: It’s 1,2M words, not 200k.

Don’t have a absolute answer, I have a similar issue with windows 11 with 64 gigs of ram. Tends to occur more but not always when have multiple (5-6) projects open at once AND when I set to close (have automatic set for 5 + hours, but often when computer goes to sleep the close command is not completed as it should.
My one solution is to open the affected projects and then do File > exit to formally close correctly. Usually when reopen this way the problem goes away, till it occurs again. It will get sluggish with typing in Scrivener at times as well.

Scrivener can’t remove the year from a file name, you can name your project with random numbers and letters and it wouldn’t mean anything to Scrivener, except that it’s a file name.
Users rename files not apps.
Then again, there’s a remote likelihood that you opened a backup, which would have a full date and time if a ZIP folder and the option to add those is ticked, but it wouldn’t have that as part of the SCRIV folder name or SCRIVX project name in the folder.
