Scrivener & Hard Drive question

Hi there!

I just downloaded the 30 day trial and started using Scrivener. I love it! However, unrelated to the download, I have been noticing my hard drive making an odd noise the past few days. I want to purchase the software, but I’m worried about doing this if I have to end up replacing my hard drive in the next week or so.

If I buy it now and the hard drive ends up needing replaced, what do I need to get the paid for scrivener back onto the new drive? I’m not sure I have the .dmg still…have to check. Would I just need to download another copy and enter the purchase license? Or would there be a “restocking” fee- or would I have to purchase again? (ack!)

And would my files that I’ve been using with the trial software work once installed again? Sorry for all the questions. I’m a very confused newbie!

Jen

Just be sure that you print out the email with the registration info. Go onto the site post HD repair/replacement and download another copy. Input your info from the email and you will be fine.

Hi Jen,

All you need is the license that you purchase. So that means you could download and install Scrivener on a new hard drive and just enter your license and everything will be working just fine. No additional fees! All your old projects will be accessible and so on–but make sure you back them up somewhere not on your current hard drive! (And if you do, check out the Tech Support sticky about using storage spaces like Dropbox or Mobile Me–basically, zip your project and save it there and then download it and work on a local copy rather than working directly from the cloud. If you use Scrivener’s “Back up to…” option regularly and check the “back up as zip” option, you’re golden.)

If you change a lot in the preferences or make new templates, also save and back up those so you can bring them back in if you reinstall the program. (If you don’t, you’ll just have to reset them again–a little time, but not nearly as devastating as losing your actual writing.) To save your preferences, click the drop down “Manage” box in the Scrivener>Preferences pane and save them wherever (on an external drive or include them in a back up). Any new templates you’ve made should be under your username/Library/Application Support/Scrivener/Project Templates. (Don’t bother saving any of the ones that come with the program, since you can just download those again–this is only if you made your own.)

So in short–don’t worry about Scrivener. Worry about your clicking hard drive. Eep! :frowning:

Thank you Mimetic and Apollo!

This puts my mind at ease.

I am hoping that the noise is not my hard drive, but I’m skeptical-I’ve had the hard drive replaced 5 months ago and heard the same noise. I feel like I keep getting a bad batch of drives.

Much thanks,
Jen

And you can always e-mail us directly - David at sales(at)literatureandlatte(dot)com is the best person to e-mail about getting your licence re-sent out. All serial numbers are stored in a database, so we can just look them up easily and send them back out again if you lose yours for some reason - we’d certainly never charge just for looking something up!

All your trial files will work fine, too, just as they would if you took them to a different computer with Scrivener on - just make sure you back up, seeing as your hard drive is making funny sounds!

All the best,
Keith

Do you at least have a warranty for your hard drive?

If not, make sure you get one when you get a new drive. I buy affordable warranties with Square Trade, though I’ve never yet had to call them on any of the warranties. (The only things that break are the ones w/o a warranty, of course.)

Also, you may want to check the computer itself. I once had a computer that regularly ate hard drives. Something in there physically damaged them. :open_mouth:

Sweet thing,
Thats just the product of your warped imagination. Ever wonder why your mum gives you funny looks, when shes reading any of your stuff. A good dose of CBT should sort you out. Or is it…ECT? :frowning:

Thank you, Keith! Yes, I will make sure to back up my files when they are modified.

Carradee, I have Applecare, so the first time they replaced the other drive for free. They should do that again if there is a problem, I would hope…

…My mom doesn’t read my stuff and tells me to “write something meaningful” and to cut the “childish escapism” (fiction, especially fantasy), but I think you get your point, there. Friends give me funny looks, sometimes.

???

Miss carradeee,
I think vic-k means Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Eletro Convulsive Therapy. A course of CBT for vic-k`s ME, resulted in the counsellor having to undergo psycho analysis (as an in-patient).
At his first session of ECT, to try and cure his persistent use of foul language, the generator went on fire.
Do take care
