Scrivener isn´t keeping my Word formatting. I never had this problem before. Why is it happening?

I usually import my book chapters into Scrivener from Word, where they are formatted just as I like them (nothing fancy, just the standard Times New Roman, 12 pt, double spaced), and just now I imported a new chapter and it changed it to a different font, much bigger, eliminating all my paragraph spaces and indents. What is up? Please help.

Hi Magali1, and welcome to the forum.

When you’re importing your materials from Word, which of Scrivener’s commands are you using?

And, which format is Word using? That is, does it have a .docx file extension or .doc? Or RTF?

I ask because it’s possible that Microsoft have changed Word’s formatting, which might be leading to the unexpected behavior.

If you have Word convert your text to RTF and then import the RTF file into Scrivener, does that give you better results?

I’ve found that some of Word’s formatting and styles aren’t imported with .docx very well, so I’ll convert to RTF. That’s the file format Scrivener uses internally, and it will often give me better results.

Also, you might check the Scrivener > Settings > Editing > Formatting tab to see your global line spacing and font. In the macOS, those are the settings Scrivener will use for all new projects and all new documents in existing projects. Those settings might also have been changed. (For any future Windows users who find this thread, the settings to review are File > Options > Editing > Formatting.)

If the imported files still have the wrong formatting, you can click into the document(s) and use Documents > Convert > Text to Default Formatting to have Scrivener correct the imported text.

That command can be destructive, so you might want to test it with one document first. In the Scrivener manual, §15.7.5 has more information on using the Documents > Convert > Text to Default Formatting command. You can access a PDF of the manual from Scrivener’s Help menu.
