Scrivener no longer underlining spelling errors

I’m using 3.0.2 and can’t figure out why spelling errors aren’t being highlighted. I can’t seem to find anything in preferences that would have turned this functionality off. Is this happening for anybody else?

If it was working, and you made no changes to preferences, try restarting. Mac OS has had some communications problems with Scrivener (and some other programs, including Apple Mail) for the past few generations; a restart typically sets things back to normal.

This has been going on for a little while, I just haven’t dealt with it. Restart doesn’t solve anything.

Also, assuming your preferences are set correctly, check the setting at Scrivener’s Menu bar > Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Check Spelling While Typing

This is also happening on multiple devices. My mac mini running 10.13.4 is also not underlining spelling errors.

I’ll reply to this thread since the other was so old. Here are my testing results:

  1. I was already in “Hide page view.” Toggling this control and restarting the program did nothing.
  2. Safeboot did nothing.
  3. Finally, I was unable to post screenshots but I have confirmed that my preferences are set correctly.

Also-
Smart quotes don’t work. M dashes and ellipses do.

Hi Jeff,

A couple more troubleshooting steps to take:

Set up a new user account for testing purposes. Beyond what macOS installs (don’t activate the ‘cloud’) in the account, only install Scrivener. Test. If spell-check works there that indicates the problem is isolated to your User account (on both machines). Finding a solution, while time consuming, should be possible.

It could be something as simple as a corrupted plist. There’s reset instructions here:

I don’t see many reports such as yours on the forum, so the problem is probably not a widespread one. Don’t know if L&L support is getting reports on the issue. If you want to go the support route, L&L’s contact info is here:
