Scrivener Remote Applications

Hi Makers of this Wonderful Program.

Question: Is there any chance in the future Scrivener will allow the users to sign on to any computer and remote access their current projects? This is my dilemma. When I have down time and don’t have my lap top readily available, (but do have access to a computer), I would like the option to continue to write when I have the opportunity. Is that something that might be considered?

Thank you for any response given.

I’ve used VNC from my iPad to my desktop to access Scrivener.

Or, if you don’t need access to the whole computer as a machine, like VNC will give you, and just want the project, that is what file sharing is for. It is a little slower when you load a project over the network (I highly recommend using cables for your computers instead of WiFi), but it’s not bad at all, and in principle this is what many people do every day in offices around the world. No need for every software package you like to make their own file server! You’ve already got that and it is based on proven technology that is decades old.

Now, I would make some accommodations on the other machine, like boosting the auto-save interval up to 15 or so seconds so that you have to take a significant break before it communicates over the network. But otherwise, Scrivener is actually very good in this role because it only loads what it needs to load while you use it, rather than downloading the entire project across the network.

If you’re talking about over the Internet though, I wouldn’t recommend either VNC or file sharing, it will just be far too slow to be useful. Using a service like Dropbox, that hides the slow speeds of the 'net behind an automated upload/download queue will be your best bet.
