Scrivener won't load documents (OS X 10.8.1)

I am runing ML 10.8.1 and the latest Scrivener downloaded version from the Lit & Lat website. I cannot open any documents nor can I create any new documents. All I get is the bouncing ball of death and Scrivener locks up and I’m forced to perform a “force Quit”

I have tried the open in safe mode, applied the sudo command, and I have re-installed ML 10.8.1 all to no avail.

Any ideas?

I split this out from another thread because it appears to be related to another issue.

What are the precise steps (all menu commands and button clicks) you are using when attempting to create a new document? Additionally, when you refer to ‘documents’, are you talking about whole project files, or documents within a project—in the binder.

Scrivenener locks up whenever I try to open or create a project file when I use the “open” or “new” command. It also occurs when I try to use the “open recent” menu item either under the File menu or from within the initial Scrivener dialog box at launch.

Scrivener does however set the file flag to open of the files that fail to open. This shows up after I do a force quit or cmplete reboot.

The problem occurs whenever I use menu commands and also when I use the mouse to select menu items

Crashing when using the menus makes me think you might have a bad plug-in installed. Have you gone through your ~/Library folder and check to make sure all of the stuff in InputManagers, and Contextual Menu Items is either 10.8 compatible or removed?

Also since you went through the effort of re-installing the OS, I’m sure you did this as well, but since you didn’t list it: did you re-install Scrivener itself? Crashing UI stuff can also indicate a corrupted download.

One last thing: have you tried using the Blank start instead of a template? Blank builds a project from scratch, whereas templates use the zip archival system to extract a pre-fab project. In cases where the zip system is damaged, Blank might work. I doubt that’s the problem, since you did a full re-install of the OS recently, but if nothing else above is useful it’s worth a try.

Update: Another thing that just came to mind, since you mention it’s happening with file access stuff, do you have any programs that enhance the normal file dialogue window? Those might have gone sour with the 10.8 update—though you’d think that would hurt all programs on the system, not just Scrivener, is stuff like TextEdit crashing as well?

My ML 10.8.1 was originally a clean install right to ML 10.8.1 after formatting the drive. (I had a HD failure and replaced the drive)

I tried the blank project and got the same results. I also re-installed Scrivener from a fresh DL from the Lit & Lat site.

Since it is a fresh install I have only MS office (up to date), Devonthink (up to date), BBEdit (up to date) and file syncro software installed. These programs all work without a hitch. I have no file access augmentation software installed and I have repaired the permissions and the partition using the Apple Disk Utils.

I am stumped

This is an odd one. So just to make sure we’re on the same page: You can load Scrivener off of the Dock, Launch Pad or by double-clicking on the icon in Applications just fine (whatever method you use). It loads up and you get a menu strip along the top like normal, and the New Project window comes up. I assume also this new project window can be safely manipulated up to the point of trying to make a project. The Options menu works fine, you can switch categories. If you try to use the Recent Files sub-menu, the program crashes however. I’m assuming that menu is theoretically empty since this is a fresh installation all around and you can’t make new projects.

Okay, in your ~/Library/Application Support/Scrivener/Logs folder, could you check the Console.log and the backup log for data. If they are non-zero, attach them. You probably do not have any crash reports since you’re having to force quit, unfortunately, but might as well check and see. It might also be worthwhile to leave Console running as well to see if any system level errors are being thrown. If stuff happens when it hangs, copy and paste that as well.

The menus all function, i.e., they display and allow selection. The Recent Menu items does display the latest attempted ´New´Documents.

attached is the console dump from the Hang.Scrivener Crash.txt (363 KB)

Also attached is the file created by Scrivenenr when it hangs Test3.scriv.zip (5.3 KB)

Hope this helps

Well after much investigation and trial and error, I finally reformatted my HD and did a fresh install of ML 10.8.1, and the first thing I installed was the latest Scrivener and it is now working!

Thanks for the investigation and help

Glad you got it sorted! For the record, according to your crash report, it seems the problems you were having were down to a third-party plugin called “ShareKit” (I haven’t heard of it before, but found out about it by looking up the problematic code blocks in your crash log). It may be that an old version of this plugin was installed on your machine in the past but that it wasn’t compatible with 10.8.1 and so started causing problems.

All the best,
Keith
