Scrivener won’t open. I keep getting the “scrivener quit unexpectedly” notice. I have not recently upgraded my Mac software or my Scrivener. I’m not even sure what version of Scrivener 3 I have because I can’t open it. I’m running Big Sur 11.6.1 on my Macbook. I have always purchased Scrivener directly from L&L. Suggestions?
If you look for Scrivener in your Applications folder, what’s the date on the file?
You can hold the Shift key when Scrivener starts to launch it without any projects. If you do that, does it open successfully?
Hi kewms,
I had already tried the Shift key after reading similar questions on this forum. The shift key doesn’t help, it still doesn’t open. If I look it up in my Applications under “Date last modified” it say September 26, 2023. (I haven’t used it in a while, but I have opened it since then).
Please reset Scrivener’s Preferences file, as explained here:
https://scrivener.tenderapp.com/help/kb/macos-troubleshooting/resetting-preferences
Does that help?
It took me a while to follow the instructions carefully, but no, it did not. Once I rebooted I still got the “Scrivener quit unexpectedly” notice when I tried to open it.
I didn’t put the preferences file back because it didn’t open – should I have put the file back?
No need. Scrivener will recreate the Preferences file if it discovers it’s missing.

Please attach a copy of the crash report: the “Scrivener quit unexpectedly” message should include an option to show more details.
Okay. Thank you for your help.
