Scriverner stopped working

Today I cannot get anything to work. Scrivener starts but then if I try adding anything, it crashes. I cannot even get back to the start up window. Don’t know what’s causing this, never happened before with the program. I am using Windows 8.1.

I’m sorry you’re having some trouble! As first steps, try uninstalling your current copy of Scrivener, clearing your browser cache, and then doing a fresh download and installation of 1.6.1. It could just be that some files in your installation were missing or corrupted, and the fresh install will fix it.

If you’re still having trouble, try booting Windows into Safe Mode and launching Scrivener there. (This article details how to do that in Win 8, as it’s changed from earlier versions.) Safe Mode will restrict a lot of other programs running, so this will help determine if the problem is an incompatibility issue between Scrivener and another program or device; if it’s working in Safe Mode, we can start trying to identify the specific trigger.
