Scrollbar not hiding in Compose view

Hi,

I have the Scroller type set to “Auto-hiding scroller” in Preferences > Compose.

However, when in Compose view and using a backdrop image (no paper fade), the vertical handle always remains visible. The bar disappears after scrolling, but not the handle.

This does not happens if the background is a solid color (with maximum paper fade).

I restarted Scrivener, but everything remains the same. I have not used Compose mode for some time, so I don’t know at which version the problem started. My system is a Mac mini 2011, Lion 10.7.4 Italian.

I also noticed something that might be related to this issue: maximum paper fade also fades the backdrop image, and not only the Mac’s background. Is this this way by design?

Best regards,
Paolo

Hmm, I can’t get this to happen. Do you also have a paper texture set up in your Compose preferences? I’m assuming not, because you can operate the fade slider, and if you have a texture and a backdrop assigned that slider is disabled. The behaviour you describe is, if I’m reading it correctly, kind of odd. The solid paper background behind the text should be the thing fading or blending in with the backdrop image. The Mac desktop should not be visible at all when a backdrop is in use.

One other thing I noticed that looks odd in your screenshot: it appears you have a text colour override going on, because the Scrivenings dividers are the same orange as the text. If that is the case, the scroller handle should be orange as well. You should be seeing something like this:

So since there seems to be something kind of off regarding two different aspects of behaviour, I’d try removing your preferences file from ~/Library/Preferences first. You can use the Manage menu in preferences to back up your settings to a file. Then try reproducing the problem after the reset, and if it has gone away, import your settings and make sure everything is still working.

Ioa,

No, but I had a custom color from the selected custom theme! The handle is exactly that custom color (black, or next to black).

Yes, what you see is a text override, and a custom paper color.

I guess the combination of the above custom settings explains the strange behaviour I’m experiencing. Choosing default values, the handle disappers when not in use.

Have you tried resetting your preferences yet? I think something is just jammed up in your settings.

  1. Go to the main preferences panel in Scrivener and use the Manage... drop-down menu to backup a copy of your settings to the desktop
  2. Close Scrivener
  3. Navigate to your ~/Library/Preferences folder. On Lion you can hold down the Option key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to find it.
  4. In the Finder search bar, type in ‘scrivener2’ and make sure the search bar is set to search in Preferences for File Name.
  5. You should get two files; drag and drop to move this file to the desktop:
com.literatureandlatte.scrivener2.plist
  1. Launch Scrivener again

At this point I would test leaving things at default, changing only what you need to to check the problem. If it is gone, use the Manage... drop-down to load your preferences from the desktop backup file and give it another test to ensure the problem is gone.

Hi Ioa,

I would say that the scroller problem disappears even without having to delete the preferences. Just removing the custom settings for text and paper color makes it behave as expected.

Thank you!
Paolo

Well if you fine with that, then this is okay. The main reason I suggested that is that on my machine, setting the custom settings you specified did not break the software, leading me to believe something is jammed up in your preferences file, rather than it being a universal bug. But like I say, if you’re okay with the way it is set up now, then it’s obviously nothing to worry too much over.
