Search bar inside settings panel

The settings panel is quite something!

It has 5 main categories and inside each one of those there’re lots of options, in some cases there 3 (maybe 4 depending on how one’d count it) levels of options. I mean it’s comprehensible, the app quite complex with lots of features, it’s normal that the settings’d be complex too.

That being said, would it be nice to have a small search bar somewhere inside the settings panel, in the likes of the MacOS system preferences?

I think it’d make a lot easier to find the right settings and a lot faster too.

I’ve never much cared for how macOS handles this problem, as it just finds major categories rather than providing a full text search of every option. If you don’t know where something is, it doesn’t help much. What has worked much better for me is an approach like Firefox, where the settings are returned as a search result in an aggregated view, where you can adjust them right then and there without having to jump around between panes and tabs.

That result is so useful in fact that it broadens how you might use it, from specifically “I don’t know where this is” cases to “I just want to efficiently review and change everything related to X feature” cases.

Granted, that kind of stuff requires a less rigid design toolkit than either platform is created with, something where user interface can be fluidly assembled and styled. That’s why you tend to only see it in browser and HTML5-based software.

You can search the menus (first option under the Help menu) which isn’t the same, but does have some overlap!
