Search Manuscipt Only Should be Retained

I’ve mentioned this before, but let me describe how not retaining the “Search Manuscript Only” option from session to session can lead to problems.

Today I was making some revisions suggested by a reviewer. I had trouble finding the scene she referenced, and used the search to find it.

I was halfway through making the revisions, when I remembered that I’d deleted that scene. I was making revisions in the trash!

So, at least make that option the default. When you search for a tasty snack, do you search in your kitchen garbage?

I just double-checked and this setting is retained between sessions for me. Are you perhaps clicking on any other search collection tabs between searches? Those will reset the search tool to the settings that were saved into the collection initially (to make modifying it easier). Now, at that point if you click right back on the Search Results tab, it should go back to draft-only, but if instead of doing that you go straight to a new search off of the search collection tab, it will modify the current search settings, set by that tab, and thus if that tab did not have draft-only set, your main Search Results tab will go back to it being off. I think that is the only condition where it should be losing the setting, so let me know what else you are doing, if not.

Interesting.

No, for me. I can select “Search Manuscript Only,” exit the app, start it up again, and it is unselected. I can also select it, search for something, exit, restart, and it is unselected.

So there’s no confusion, this is the option I’m talking about:

Does this happen in a test project as well? I’d try:

  1. Create a new project on the desktop using the “Blank” starter.
  2. Type a word into the untitled starter file.
  3. Duplicate it, and drop the duplicate in Research.
  4. Search for the word with “Search Draft Only” selected. You should only get one result.
  5. Alt-F4 and reload.

I followed the steps and can confirm that in my case the setting is not persistent either.

Though I never use this, so it’s not really a problem for me, I also have the same behavior.

Now that we’ve established that it happens in some circumstances and not other, any ideas on how I can get it to not happen on my machine?
