Simple printing of Scrivening

I want to print out my Scrivenings as simply as possible, with the title of each file/folder and a line separating them.

I set this up in the Compile window so it compiles correctly. However, when I go to print directly from the Scrivening the PDF output is missing the line separator (the titles are there).

Any thoughts?

File > Page Setup > Settings > Scrivener > Options allows you to set up how things get printed from File > Print. Compile options have no effect on regular printing.

Just to be clear… there is no way to insert lines between files that would show up through File > Print, that could only be done by compiling the Scrivening?

There’s no way to customise File > Print Document to mess around with the lines between scrivenings, no, as it’s intended for just rough print outs. The whole point of Compile is to provide exactly this sort of customisation.

Might there be an option in the future of basing quick print on the compile setting (as I believe it was in the previous version).

I use quick print ALL the time, it seems like a hassle to always have to go through the compile settings (if only to specify which files to include) to do a quick paper read of a scene or chapter.

My two cents.

There was no option like this in 1.x. Quick print works fine for rough drafts, and this is what Compile is for. There have been no changes here, so no, no plans for this. One thing I do plan to add at some point is “Compile selection” though, which may do what you are after - but it will still involve going through the Compile sheet.

Well in 1.54 I was using File > Page Setup > Scrivener > Text Document Options > then checking the box Use Compile format.

I thought this option was allowing me to use format choices from the compile section for quick print outs (at least for a larger font size for titles, if not a file seperating line perhaps). Maybe I was wrong.

Yes, all that did was use the font and paragraph formatting, nothing else. You can still override the font in 2.0 in the page setup. Print will never do a full compile, it would be pointless duplication, as they are very different functions. If you want compile settings… Use Compile.

Yes, 2.0 can override the font, but only for the entire file. If I recall correctly, 1.54 allowed overriding the font on titles alone.

I don’t think it’s a lot to expect, when quick-printing a Scrivening to have some indication of where one file ends, and the next begins. Maybe all the other writers using Scrivener have highly organize manuscripts and can tell the dividing line between their files. I can’t always. Which means I’m left to inserting some kind of manual indication of where my files begin, seems like a waste of time. Yes, I can use Compile, but if there’s a quick-print option, seems like it should have a minimal level of functionality.

We can leave this thread… thanks for your patience.

Right, I see what you mean now. The thing is that Scrivener 2.0’s compile settings are now vastly more powerful - Scrivener 1.x’s were rudimentary - so to apply them to a simple print would involve a full compile anyway, complete duplication. To differentiate between scrivenings a double line break is added, or you can choose to insert titles. And as I say, for more control I will be adding a “Selection” option to the compile sheet so that you can compile the current scrivening set for printing if you want all the options. But I won’t be duplicating all the compile settings in the print panel, that way madness lies.
Best,
