Single quote

Hello,
I am finding that I cannot write:
‘That is it then.’ he said, without having to correct Scrivener which wants to put the closing quote first and then the full stop.
Which means when I want the full stop, I cannot put the closing marks next. If I hit the key twice, I get two, then have to delete one.
It only does it in Scrivener, not in Word and not here.
Can I change that somewhere?
As to using the “” instead, it won’t let me do that at all. When I key in shift ", I get the umlaut over the next letter.
Hope you can help.

It sounds like you’ve got a different keyboard layout or language enabled in Scrivener’s editor–the US International layout for instance uses the double-quote as a dead key to add the umlaut over the following letter for certain characters. It’s possible switching that will also fix the problem you’re seeing with the .’ The single quote can also be used as a dead key, so it won’t appear immediately after you type it, which could be causing some confusion about what’s going on. If you hit the space key after typing the single quote, the keypress will be used as a single quote rather than the grave accent. You’ll need to press space again to add a space.

If switching the layout does not fix that problem, then it’s likely you have accidentally created a substitution which is replacing the .’ sequence with '. and you can fix it by deleting or disabling that in the custom substitutions list, accessible from the Corrections tab of Tools > Options…

Jennifer you are a genius! I have a new laptop and wondered what the INTL meant in the right bottom corner next to date and time. I changed it to US and the problem is fixed.
I would never ever have found that solution!
I am very grateful!

Great, glad it’s solved! When multiple keyboard layouts are enabled, the default shortcut for switching between them is Ctrl+Shift, so it’s not difficult to hit by accident. If you want the layouts still available but less accident-prone, you can change the shortcuts or remove them entirely in the Advanced Key Settings of the Text Services and Input Languages dialog.
