I took a snapshot of my project (I think). Firstly, is this possible? When I open the snapshot menu under documents, often the ‘show snapshot’ selection is greyed out. It seems to depend on what I select in the binder for the project. Yes, no?
I particularly wanted to create a snapshot of a folder that I am using in corkboard mode to layout the last part of my novel. Whenever I go to the folder in the binder where I am keeping this corkboard layout and select it and then select, document/snapshot, the ‘show snapshot’ selection is greyed out. Okay, maybe I am using the thing incorrectly, but the help is a tad vague on it’s precise use.
I use the draft folder to hold all my chapters, then I have another folder called ‘working documents’, with numerous other folders inside that. The ‘working documents’ folder is not part of the draft folder. I have done this so I can keep track of my total word count by keeping only those current chapters in the draft folder.
If I hit command 5, does that copy everything in my project? I have a research folder with lots of pdf’s and web pages. Does it copy all of this as well?
Why do snapshots get linked to binder folders? For instance, some show their contents under the documents/Snapshot/show snapshot menu, and then other folders in the binder do not allow selection of the ‘show snapshots’.
Dazed and confused in the glare of snapshots…
cheers
Steve
Snapshots are per-document - they take a snapshot of the text of the current document. So if you hit cmd-5, it just took a snapshot of whatever document was visible in the editor at the time. Show Snapshots will only be available if a snapshot has been taken of the selected document.
We have a 5-minute screencast on using snapshots here:
I have created a ‘layout’ of the rest of my ms using the cork board, making notes as I need them on each card. I am about to substantially rearrange and edit this corkboard which is the outline for the remainder of my ms.
Is there any way that I can capture the state of the current corkboard so that I can return to the original layout, or one in between, after I make this substantial edit? I watched the video, thanks very much, and it helped, sort of.
What I do in that case is select the entire folder, right-click and duplicate it, then put the copy somewhere safe in a folder named something like “Pieces” or “Drafts” (on the same level as the Draft and Research folders).
Excellent idea! Thanks so much Keith. Couldn’t see the trees for the woods.
Again, thanks for your fast response.
By the way, been writing with Scriv for almost 4 years now. That’s when I stopped using MS Word. Never looked back. Thanks again for such an incredibly useful writing tool. I would be hopelessly lost without it.
This thing has really fit my writing style like a glove. Best of luck with v2.0. I have only had the one request for a new and useful Scriv feature, but I will have to wait to see if it gets implemented in v2.0.
Would that be extra windows for viewing research documents in? If so, you may be in luck…
Thanks for the kind words.
All the best,
Keith
P.S. Credit goes to Carradee for the reply about duplicating the binder, though.
P.P.S. Remember you can also back up the whole project to a zip file using File > Backup To if you want to keep a copy of the project before making major changes.
