Scrivener 2 has been running fine since launch, until today…
I routinely keep a few documents open, but Scrivener crashed when I hit CMD + W to close one today. It happened again on relaunch, and now I can’t close any document, nor quit the application — the app appears to be working normally, but won’t respond to CMD + W or Q, the toolbar close button or the close/quit menu options. I’ve repaired disk permissions, to no avail.
This sounds like an exception has been thrown. From the Apple menu, select “Force Quit”, and force Scrivener to quit that way. Then re-download Scrivener as I’ve uploaded a slightly amended version that should - I hope! - fix this bug. It will go out as a proper 2.0.1 update in a few days to everyone, but given that you’re experiencing problems you should re-download and re-install now.
I’ve downloaded the app again, but when I tried to copy it into the Applications forlder, I get the error:
“The operation can’t be completed because the item “ScrivenerMetaDataImporter” is in use.”
Scrivener wasn’t running at the time, so I tried launching it again in order to exit gracefully (rather than with a crash) to hopefully resolve the copy error. However, launching the app gives the Mac OS error:
“You can’t open the application Scrivener.app because it may be damaged or incomplete.”
Deleting the existing app resolved this and I’m now running the new build. So far, it seems OK, so fingers crossed…
Also, I’ve just discovered the conflict warning for when an about-to-be-opened project is opened elsewhere. This makes inadvertent Dropbox cock-ups much less likely — a nice touch!
Glad you got it sorted. The “meta-data” warning just means that OS X was still hanging on to the Spotlight plugin used by Scrivener - sometimes you have to log out and back in again to make that go away. That probably stopped the copy happening half-way through leading to a corrupt install, but it sounds as though you’ve fixed it.
Glad you like the new warning! 1.54 had a similar warning but it was much less specific and could happen in too many situations; the new one is much more adept and offers you the chance of making a copy of your project if you’re not sure whether it’s open elsewhere.
