Spell check not accepting personal dictionary words that have apostrophes in

Adding words in another language which uses apostrophes in compound words to the personal dictionary does nothing to spell check. These words are still being picked up as being wrong on spell check. I assume this is because of the apostrophes, as every other word I’ve added is fine, and even case sensitive.

Hi Linnadhiel, welcome to the forum.

My setup is for French. And indeed, when I add a word that’s using an apostrophe, Scrivener’s spellcheck still doesn’t recognize it.
But in fact, if you look in your personal word list, you’ll see that it has been added.
The solution is to tell the spellcheck to ignore that spelling afterwards.

I am not certain, given this fact, that it is that useful to even bother adding it to the personal wordlist, but not having paid too much attention to such a detail – and seemingly the word not causing me any problem afterwards -, I would say that perhaps the combination of those two actions sets it right forever.

Add the word temporarily to Synopsis. It will strip the ‘smart quote’.
To check spelling in Synopsis you need to select the whole word.
Add to Dictionary that way and you’ll see the word no longer has the red underline in the editor and there will be no comebacks.

On Scrivener 3 for Windows, the word list is contained in a readable file called wordlist.ini found at C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\LiteratureAndLatte\Scrivener.
Words are listed in 2 categories, General and Ignore.
[General] stores added words, while [Ignore] stores words you’ve told Scrivener to ignore.
I don’t know if adding a word to an .INI file is safe, when out of Scrivener, of course.

It is. I did before without any problem. I have a post somewhere documenting so.

But no need, both are right-click menu functions.

Tip: In Windows you may need to make the AppData folder visible. It is hidden by default. To do this:

  1. Open the C\users\YourUserName folder
  2. Then open the options dialog (… menu item, then Options)
  3. Click the View tab at the top
  4. Locate the ‘Hidden files and folders’ item a little more than half way down
  5. Click the ‘Show hidden files, folders, and drives’ item
  6. Click the [Apply] button.

Hope this is helpful.
Tom
