Split screen mode in focus mode

I haven’t been able to find a way to do this, so I’ll drop it in the wish list. I’m working in split screen mode and really like the fill screen/focus option. Is there a way that, when you have two files in the split screen, that they can appear side by side in the fill screen view? If not, is that possible to add?

Thanks

Open your split documents in QuickRef windows. Then when you go to full screen you can still see both.

Are you referring to the native OS X Full Screen feature, where the project window stretches to fill every pixel? If so everything should be pretty much the same experience as windowed mode, and if you have the editor split it should stay split when transitioning between standard and full screen modes.

If you mean Composition Mode however, the “zen” writing mode, then the above tip in regards to QuickReference panels is the best approach. Do note that you may need to set them to “float” if they do not appear at first, or disappear as soon as you click and write. That’s Window/Float QuickReference Panels or Ctrl-Cmd-Q.

The quickreference option is interesting, but clumsy. I really like the side by side option and not having floating windows on the side.

Going into OS X full screen works, but I admit I benefit from not having the buttons and such appearing. The stripped down text helps me focus. I’ll use this option, but would still like to see the split screens transfer to composition mode if the coding wouldn’t be too difficult.

Thanks

There are no plans to add split views to Composition Mode. But, you can pare down Full Screen mode quite a bit if that is what you prefer. I’d recommend:

  • In the Appearance preference pane: Always auto-hide toolbar in full screen mode.
  • And right below it: Hide binder and inspector when entering full screen mode.

Then you could go into Full Screen and alter the editor layouts in the Edit/Layout/ sub-menu to remove the buttons. If you want you can adjust the colours for full screen alone, in the Appearance pane.

Finally, save your window layout settings with the Window/Layouts/Manage Layouts… menu command. When you do so from Full Screen, it saves that as well, meaning that when you trigger it from standard mode, it switches to this layout, and then back to whatever you were using before, when you leave (though you might want to save your normal window settings to a layout, too).

As an example, I’ve attached a layout (for Mac) you can install using the gear menu in that manage layouts window.

The nice thing about this method is that you can do things you couldn’t otherwise, in Composition:
