Starting Search

Dear All,

I use Scrivener for non-fiction writing and one of my projects is pretty large. When I search inside that project Scrivener regularly freezes (shortly) while searching. While I start typing Scrivener starts the search already and since it has a lot of files to search Scrivener freezes.
I don’t mind the freezing in general (I accept that it comes with large projects) but I would like to finish typing my search word first

Would it be possible to have an option for the search that it would only start searching once I finished typing my search word?

Right now, I start typing my search word, Scrivener freezes and I wait for a short while and when Scrivener un-freezes I can go back and type the rest of my search word and finally get the results I wanted.
If Scrivener would start searching after I finished typing, it would still freeze but I would have the results for the whole search word when it un-freezes.

(I hope this explanation makes sense  )

Thanks,
Sarah

Hmm, didn’t Project Search (under Edit -> Find) once provide its own box for non-incremental searches? If so, no longer; it just bumps the cursor to the toolbar control.

As a workaround, you can use the dropdown to limit searches to a lightly populated field such as Status. Search will immediately deliver the null; and then you can drop down again to flip the search range to All, with the terms already entered.

Related improvement request: The specs displayed in the search box are not updated after the user has changed them via the dropdown. If the user runs the search, clears it, and returns to the editing window, the new specs will be displayed. I think the change itself should trigger.

Dear Jerome,

thanks for the tip for the workaround, I will try that

Hi Sarah,

Would it be possible to send your project to us at our support address so that we can test it? It sounds as though the Windows search routine may need a little bit of optimising, or, if that’s not possible, that it may need to build in a delay before triggering the search.

Thanks!
Keith

Dear Keith,

of course. As long as it is not a problem, that what I’ve written in the project is in German?

I’ve found the email address on the website, but how do I send it best?
Should I send a zipped backup (which is nearly 15MB) or would it be better to put the zipped backup into dropbox and send you a link?

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Great, thanks - and of course it is not a problem that it’s in German, as we won’t be reading it anyway.

Zipping it up and putting it on Dropbox would be great. Please send the link to windows.support AT literatureandlatte.com, and mark it for the attention of Jennifer. Please direct her to this thread and say that I asked for the project to be sent to her for testing search slowdown (Jennifer does most of our Windows bug testing).

Thanks again,
Keith

Hey Keith,

send the email
