Printed pages is the number of pages you will get when you go to File > Compile Draft and print off the draft on your printer using your current printer settings (most likely A4 or Letter size, depending on where you are based). Paperback pages takes the word count and divides it by whatever is set in the Options pane of the Projects Statistics sheet - 350 by default - to give you a very rough idea of how many pages your draft might be in a paperback novel.

Hello! Just an FYI - I’m currently at 57,925 words. My (paperback) page count is 147, my (printed) page count is 193 … but if I divide 57,925 by 350 (which is my current setting), I get 166 pages.
Not complaining - I was just looking for a rough idea, and now that I know how the calculations are made I have a better understanding of where I might be. Just letting you know in case it was a concern for you that it did not actually calculate at my word count divided by 350.
Thanks for the help!
Actually it doesn’t quite work like that. Whereas your word count is the real word count, the paperback pages count uses the character count and counts six characters as being a “word”. So 350 words-per-page really means 2,100 characters-per-page. This is based on an old typography rule of thumb, the idea of average word length being five characters plus one space between each (lots of long words would mean more pages, lots of short ones would mean less, hence the reason for using an average word count basis rather than the real word count - consider the number of times you would use “a”, “the”, “he”, “she”, etc, which take up less space on the page and reduce the number of pages required).
Hope that makes sense.
All the best,
Keith
That makes complete sense! Mystery solved. Thanks so much for your time!
