Strange behaviour - bug?

Hi there, friend of mine showed me scrivener. It looked fantastic! I am considering to buy it. But there was one thing that seemed odd to me: soemtines while having activated the scrivenings view and having pointed it to a folder with many of that text slices / textes in it, when he clicked in the right side in the scrivenings, then the whole content showed just scrolled to the top. Sometimes it scrolled by itself so much, that you you could not see anmyore the cursor where he was writing.
Is it a normal behaviour? Is it a known bug? In my opinion you can’t work with this setting.
Would be kind if someone could say something about it, before I am going to buy it.By the way, he was running it on Windows 10.
kind regards

Hi.

First off: you, yourself, can try/test Scrivener for 30 non-consecutive days for free on your own computer.
To do so: visit Literature & Latte’s website, download and install the demo. (Which has no limitation other than that 30 days. It is fully featured and all.)

Second: I think your friend might need a new mouse.
I run Scrivener under Windows 10: never experienced anything like that.

Hi Vincent,
I will try the demo. By the way, I am an IT professional. From what I saw that was not a matter of a sticky mouse.

Cursor/mouse movements more under the control of software deep into the Windows operating system, I suspect.

Good that you will install the trial version of Scrivener on your up-to-date Windows machine and see if same.

Hi there,
now I tested it with that scrivener project and the 30 days trial - fresh installation.
Here too I have the same situation.
Sadly I can confirm this behavior!
I offer my help / input for analysis & debugging.
If give the focus or I start typing then the whole content of gets scrolled up automatically. No work is possible. The content was made by copy and paste of text passages from a text written in libreoffice and stored as docx Document. From this document sentences were highlighted and via copy and past inserted into scrivener

I tried to upload an image (it does not work). If I click in this field to edit it, this hole text goes automatically up and it vanishes.

cheers

From where to what ?

Of course (I am pretty sure I don’t need to tell you this), if you type, the view will scroll to show the cursor position.
There is a feature named Typewriter scrolling, but it doesn’t move the current cursor position out of view. It actually keeps it centered.

…the typewriter Scrolling is deactivated - checked it.
To describe the setting: on the left side a folder is marked with approx 60 textes in it).
Now let us concentrate on the right side: scrivenings mode is activated.
So, we have the setting depicted in the user manual on page 38, picture 4.13 (to make an example since I cannot upload images).
Now: If I click on ‘Opening Scene’ (to stay at the example), then this whole content rushes up automatically to the top or even far beyond the top so that this text cannot be seen at all.
Now it would be a blind typing: typing now would generate text, but I would have to scroll the whole down to see what I have written.
cheers

Perhaps it just happens because the text / the content in scrivener has been generated via copy & paste from another app causing some foreign metadata being transferred to scrivener and so resulting in this odd bahaviour.
It this a possible reason?
cheers

I don’t know.
Is that then the very same project than the one your friend has ?

See if the interactive tutorial works properly or not for you ?

…I can confirm it: it the same project and I have the original sources / document.
I wil export the original source as blank ASCII and import it text by text into scrivener having at the end the same result on the left side and will then click on the right again.
Doing so, it should be like a manual typing of the text.
Then I can see how scrivener reacts.
Hoping for the best - keep you updated.
By the way: I have tested it on 2 machines nodes with the same odd result.
cheers

Why not simply create a new project and populate a couple of files with Lorem ipsum text?
That’ll be way faster.

This is a real use case and actual novel content and in my opinion scrivener is being used in a proper way. Therefore it should work as expected.
cheers

If you have the same odd result on three machines: there is something wrong with the common denominator.
In this case: the project.

You can try this one I just quickly put together for you to test:
test scroll-bak-2023-06-11T11-44.zip (65.8 KB)

…thanks - I will load it into scrivener and see what happens.
What do you expect? …the same odd behaviour probably, correct?
Thanks!

I expect it to work fine if the issue is with your current project.
I expect it to misbehave just as your real project if it is user error.

…so: all works fine, no add behaviour. Therefore it is some project attribute / parameter responsible for it.
What do you mean in detail with ‘common denominator’? Please just give me a hint ;-)- thanks.
cheers

…in this context I mean.
Anyway I will try also for my buddy to import the text as he did, but then via clean ASCII texteditor (notepad++) and see if I have the same results.
cheers

You can use paste and match style

Select the text (ctrl-A), cut it (ctrl-X) and then Ctrl-Shft-V
This will paste it back, but stripped of the formatting, and of whatever might be causing this.

No need to “but then via clean ASCII texteditor (notepad++)”

Do it for all your binder files. One by one.

Just make sure you properly back-up the project before engaging in such modifications.

Tell your friend it is always best (almost a must) to use paste and match style when pasting content from the internet.
This will avoid issues with the background formatting data that gets pasted along; like in the current case.

Hi there @MarkusFen,

Prior to making your purchase decision, I strongly recommend you work through Scrivener’s Interactive Tutorial (Help > Interactive Tutorial) project.

It’s an overview of the major features and well worth a couple hours of your time.

Best,
Jim
