Suggestions on Gamification?

Hey friends.

I like setting goals for daily writing. I usually hit 5k+ words per day, and like to get that recorded somewhere. Two reasons: 1) because I like seeing the numbers go up and giving myself a high-five, and 2) because I like to track which days I perform better on as it helps me tune my progress over time (pro tip: I suck on a hangover).

Prior to it dying*, I used to use Chris Fox’s 5K app on iOS. Simple: kick off a sprint and enter your words at the end. Super easy to use and great for easy progress tracking.

  • It still kinda works but hasn’t been updated in a while, and Chris has yanked it from the store. I imagine it will get buggier over time as iOS advances.

Then I tried out 4thewords, which is pretty cute, but is a PITA if you don’t want to use it as your primary editor (which I don’t: SCRIV4LIFE is my license plate). There’s no API (that I know of) to interface with that either.

Sooo… do you have any suggestions on how you track and/or gamify your writing progress? Scriv shows word counts but not (unless I’ve missed something) a handy progress report over days/time. Anyone have any tips to share on how you do this?

Appendix E.6 in What’s New, Writing History, with full documentation in §20.1.4, pg. 495.

Someone at L&L is reading my mind, but using sorcery. Perfect! Thank you for that. Very good tracker now built-in
