So-I’m typing on the Windows beta at work and my Mac at home. When I e-mailed myself my Windows file and tried to open it on my Mac I got an error. The Windows version has a tag of “scrivx” and the Mac wants a tag of “scriv”. Why is this? How can I fix it?
Save the file to disc and add an x.
The bigger problem is that you need to make sure that you zip the file before sending it back and forth. Scriv files are directories so you need to package them in a common file format like a zip file.
Sounds like all you sent to yourself was the XML file that defines the project—not the project itself. The whole “MyNovel.scriv” directory that Scrivener created is your project, not just the “MyNovel.scrivx” file. Second Jaysen’s advice, since it is an entire folder, send the directory to a compressed zip archive first, before attaching it.
Thanks guys! I’ll try this. I started the file on the Windows so adding an x is not an option.
Yes it is. Turn viewing file extensions on, and then rename the file, and add an x on the end. Windows might give you a “this might corrupt your file!” alert, and click “OK”, and poof, renamed extension.
Sidenote on the “corrupt your file”: it will not actually alter any data inside that file. What they are trying to indicate is that if you do something like change a .doc to a .txt, it won’t work in programs like you think it will, which for the average end-user is “corruption”.
No-what I meant is that I’m trying to open it on a Mac-I can’t even open the download so there’s no option to add anything. I tried taking the x off the Windows version and if I do that then Scrivener won’t open it.
what download?
Can you provide numbered list of the steps you are taking? That will help us point you in the right direction.
I’m having issues with this as well. I created a backup of my project on the Mac, saved it as a zip file and transferred it to my PC via DropBox. The zip came over fine. I unzipped it, no problem. There’s now a directory with the name of my project and the .scriv extension. When I go to open it, Windows seems to be looking for a file, not a folder, so selecting the folder only causes it to open the folder and show me the contents. Which leaves me a little lost.
Well, I was under the mistaken impression that I could just e-mail myself the Scriv file like I do word docs. So then I downloaded the file onto my Mac, and couldn’t open it because of the missing “x”. I think I will try a flash drive tomorrow. And in the meantime if I want to write at home, I’ll just write in a word do and upload it to Scirv.
It is worth noting that Scrivener for Mac 1.54 does not use the same file format as Scrivener for Windows 1.0.
If you want to share projects between Mac and Windows, do be sure you are using the 2.0 branch of Scrivener for Mac; that is the file format being used by Windows 1.0.
The root directory of the Mac 2.0 / Windows 1.0 “file” format includes a file with a .scrivx extension. The Mac 1.0 “file” format only has files with .scriv extensions.
So please confirm that you are using Mac 2.0 (available through the NaNoWriMo preview) and Windows 1.0 (the current beta)
Tiggerfairy,
Make sure you take the ENTIRE FOLDER. You really should zip the folder up to move it. Once you zip it you can move it using just about any method you choose. USB, email, scp, ftp, dropbox, etc.
Similar problem to me. I copied the entire project across and tried to open the .scrivx file in Windows. Nothing happens.
Thanks KD, I think that explains my issue.
If it just doesn’t open it, this is an issue I’ve mentioned here before, and there’s an e-mail outstanding to Lee about the issue.
Analysis from various people on the board was that it was related to ScrivMac and ScrivWin starting from different indices when handling keywords. It remains to be seen if that’s it.
A relevant thread is:
Awesome. The keyword fix worked.
Thanks,
