Sync folders on exit

Is it possible to set an option to sync with external folder on exit?

I fear I may forget to sync on exiting Scrivener and will edit a file in Elements on iPhone that was not synced and my have a sync issue when opening Scrivener again or may overwrite and lose data.

No, sorry, there’s no setting for this. You can create a keyboard shortcut to make the sync process a little faster, but you still have to remember to do it. Still, I find it easier this way because it’s almost a muscle-memory thing as well.

I hope Keith can add this to his ever growing list of features. It would eliminate the risk of data loss or conflicts in the files. Also, I would rather use my muscle memory, the little I have left, for something else. Thanks.

Moved to wish list.

No plans for this at the moment, sorry.
Best,
Keith

Keith what are the consequences if the file on Scrivener is edit and not synced and then the file is edited on iphone or ipad and synced?

It’s pretty minimal, since Scrivener snapshots every time it changes something in the project. If you make a mistake, you can audit these snapshots using the Compare feature and integrate any missing edits. You might find it easiest to split the window and Opt-drag the snapshot to the second header bar. So at worst you’ll need to merge some edits; nothing will be lost.

Just make sure you have “Take snapshots of affected documents before updating” checked in the sync dialogue!

I would like to add my voice in request for an “automatic sync on exit” option.

The very concept of “synchronization” is based on the idea that multiple files are instantaneously corroborated with each other. This is precisely the workflow theory of DropBox itself: as soon as I edit a file “here” I can rest assured that it will be updated over “there” as well. If ALL applications taking advantage of cloud storage/sync required this extra step of “manually syncing” our files, we’d all wonder what the point of this synchronization was in the first place if it did nothing but replace one manual step (copying the file) with just a different manual step (requesting a sync).

Granted, I can imagine some scenarios in which a user would NOT want automatic synchronization, but in my context it severely undermines the whole feature of “synchronization” itself if it is a “feature” that must be manually recalled every time I exit the program.

I love Scrivener. Thanks for great program. Please consider this feature integration.

Thank you James, you stated it better then I did. I hope Keith can fit it into an update. Thanks.

No plans for this at the moment but I rule nothing out in the long run. “Synchronisation” involves syncing two sets of files - there’s nothing in the concept or definition of synchronisation itself that says it should be automatic.
Thanks,
Keith
