Sync with Plain Text inconsistent

I love my iPad, I love Scrivener 2.0. But I’m finding that work is not being consistently synced between them. Mostly it seems that changes in Plaintext don’t get transferred, but it has happened the other way too. I no longer trust my editing on iPad and this is really hobbling my ability to write during traveling. Am I missing some steps here?

It’s difficult to say without more information. If you can provide the necessary steps to reproduce the problem, then I can look at it.

I will run through the sequence and report back with more specifics. I was asking here first to see if there are any common issues I should look at first, e.g. If others had had any problems with this and what was a known. I’ll post late in the day with the particulars.

No, I’m not aware of any issues, so let me know when you have something and I’ll look into it.
Thanks,
Keith

I think I understand this now. I had thought that (like the Plain Text app) Scrivener synced on close with the text files as similar to how it automatically backs up when this is selected in preferences. But it looks like the sync process is set up to be manual all the way… I have to pull down the File menu and select it, then hit the button for it to sync. This makes sense to maintain control over your work sessions, but it would help to have a button available on the toolbar so I don’t have to go to the menu and it’s easier to remember to sync. If I forget to do the sync, my iPad doesn’t have the most recent changes and I’m stuck if my laptop isn’t available.

Some other sync issues:
It bugs me that every time I sync to Plain Text and back to Scrivener I lose the spaces between paragraphs I put in in Scrivener. Is there a preference option I missed?

I also get an error message from Scrivener, although I have plenty of room in my Dropbox and nothing is lacking in the synced draft files as far as I can tell. See attached.screen-capture-88.jpg

That makes sense - yes, it’s a manual sync from Scrivener.

Have you tried deselecting “Automatically convert plain text paragraph spacing” at the bottom of the external folder sync sheet? If that’s checked, Scrivener removes spacing between paragraphs.

Check your document names. Another user had this error recently and it turned out to be because one of his document titles was more than 255 characters long, so it couldn’t be written to a file (because 255 characters is the maximum for file names on disk). I’ve fixed that for 2.0.1 - the file name will get shortened - but for now see if that is the issue.

Regarding a toolbar control, a couple of users have asked for this but the trouble is I get requests for toolbar items for just about every feature, and it’s not possible - or desirable (as specified in the HIG) - to have toolbar items for everything. I don’t rule it out, but in the meantime you can always use the system preferences to set up a keyboard shortcut for this.

All the best,
Keith

Wow. Thanks for your speedy reply, Keith. I forgot about setting up a keyboard shortcut. I’ll do that for sync right now. I will also double check the title consistency, although I let Scrivener write and name the files when I set the sync up originally. Sometimes things creep in. A case of writers creep?

That is when zombies invariably enter the plot. For some authors this point begins at a much earlier phase in the book than others.
